About the Author Mari Gallion Mari Gallion was born in San Jose, California in 1969 to her father, Jack, a fireman, and mother, Sue, a stay-at-home mom. In 1973, her family moved to the once-remote valley of Eagle River, Alaska, bordering the Chugach State Park. As a youth Mari enjoyed exploring nature trails and undeveloped lots on her moped, reading fantasy genre books, gymnastics, and playing her violin. In 1987, Mari graduated from Steller Secondary School and studied at Marymount Palos Verdes College in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, where she later graduated with her AA in Liberal Arts. In 1990, Mari began her studies at University of San Francisco. Mari’s best subjects in school were Logic, Creative Writing, and Dante. Mari received her BA in English in 1992. As the economy was extremely bad at that time, for the following year and a half Mari eked out a living working simultaneously as a retail clerk at FAO Schwarz Toy Store and an English as a Second Language teacher at San Francisco’s Chinatown YWCA. From 1993 to 1995, Mari lived the exciting life of an expatriate, teaching English at Barcelona’s AFIC Idiomas, and traveling to The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (she strongly considered getting off the train in Monaco, but at the time the luggage lockers in Monte Carlo cost more than a hotel room is Prague). Mari returned to Eagle River in 1995, and started working as a limousine driver, a tour guide, and a marketing manager for a mortgage company. In March of 1998, Mari got the news that she was pregnant with her son, Oberon Gallion. Now Mari is a very happy and successful single mother and author. Mari graduated with her Master’s degree from Alaska Pacific University in Spring of 2006. Mari’s current hobbies are playing music, horseback riding, swimming, activism, and helping single pregnant women. |
